Веселая жизнь советского завмага Аристарха Петровича заканчивается, когда его жена Вера находит в его кармане любовную записку… В гневе она собирается донести прокурору на своего мужа и его подельников о нетрудовых доходах – спекуляциях и воровстве.
Будучи в шаге от тюрьмы, герои прикладывают все силы для того, чтобы помирить главного героя с супругой, взывая к сочувствию, философствуя, угрожая, привлекая все новых и новых персонажей в роскошную квартиру, где и разворачивается эта почти детективная история. Удастся ли достичь примирения и не оказаться за решеткой?..
